Sometimes I question if I am really in college. haha. :) Last week Xiu Ming (Harry) texted me and said, "Maura, let's go travel." So, on Saturday we were up at 6 AM heading to the bus station. Funny story: we misheard the bus number, and ended up on the wrong bus. We realized a few seconds before the bus left. Whew. It was close. BUT, we made it and we headed to Shaoshan. It took about two hours by bus. I loved driving through the China countryside. 韶山is the birthplace of MaoZeDong (the late former President of China). We toured multiple museums, and I enjoyed learning more of what Mao accomplished for the country of China. The weather was perfect! Harry kept me
laughing all day. We practiced both English and Mandarin. ShaoShan is a small town in the middle of green forest. It was so quiet. The air quality is quite poor, but it wasn't
as bad here. I consider it a blessing. Mao was born and raised here, so the entire town is dedicated to famous landmarks or places he loved. This was an entrance to one of many
museums. There are statues everywhere in honor of Mao. Harry explained to me the
customs of when an individual might join a political party and why Mao is considered one of China's greatest visionaries. It was quite interesting to learn, especially coming from Harry's point of view. Fun fact: I was the ONLY foreigner both Harry and I saw the
entire day. Good thing I'm used to getting strange looks! :) We also tried a famous green dessert (we still don't know what its' name is. haha). The lady who was making them was astounded I was able to answer her questions in Mandarin. Then, she gave us an extra dessert because of it! *self high five* It was green, and reminded me of zucchini, but
was incredibly sweet. In the picture, it looks like green mush. :) We both loved it, and I
might have to go back just for the dessert. :) As you probably noticed, I love the outdoors and being in nature. We visited Mao's house in the middle of the mountains.
It was beautiful! Fall is finally here in China, so the leaves are beginning to turn orange and red. Harry and I walked around the pond talking about the differences between
China and America. Seriously, I loved talking with Harry and spending more time with him. Thank to Harry, I had yet another grand adventure. I am so grateful. I heel clicked so many times, and even convinced Harry to try. "Maura, you are so happy." Yes, Harry. I am so incredibly happy.
