Hello everyone! I thought I would write about what a neat experience it has been to prepare a traditional Chinese poem the past few weeks. My good friend, Amanda, convinced me to join her team of International Students. We were a group of three: myself, Amanda (from Sweden), and Jack (from England). We have had three Chinese students help us with our pronunciation and overall performance. In one of my last posts I wrote of our practices and even included pictures. I have truly enjoyed working with them all and spending countless hours practicing. I'm guessing everyone saw my performance of "Life is a Highway" because they asked me to sing a solo for part of the poem along with presenting lines. It was a shocker, but I'm so glad I stepped out of my comfort zone. All of our hard work paid off! Last Thursday was the first performance for Hunan Normal University. There were 14 teams prepared and some were considered fluent in the language. The stage was very large and I won't lie: it was quite nerve
racking to perform in front of a panel of judges. BUT, did very well. My solo went fantastic. As I looked out on the audience, many were videoing. That's a good sign, right? :) Oh! I almost forgot: in between two of the performances the announcer got on the microphone and called me to the stage. Then, she announced that I was going to sing a song for the crowd... yep... straight up... So, naturally, I sang "The Man I Want to Be" by Jake Scott. It's one of my favorite songs of all time and the crowd loved it. And to be honest, I loved performing it. :) After all groups had performed, we waited for the results. DRUM ROLL PLEASE! Our group placed 2nd! How neat is that?! So, we will perform at the Hunan Province Poetry Competition this week where they will choose one winner. I have had so much fun learning this poem (从前慢congqianman) with my friends. Even more, I have come to love this language more. I didn't know it was possible, but here I am. :)
